Mumbai Indians fans made their opinions well known when Hardik Pandya was made the captain of the side axing Rohit Sharma. Since the decision there has been speculation about whether Rohit would enter the upcoming mega auction. Former Royal Challengers Bengaluru player Ab de Villiers said he does not see a “possibility ” of Rohit leaving MI.

“That will be quite a story if Rohit moves from Mumbai Indians to RCB,” De Villers said on his YouTube channel responding to a fan question. “Wow! Imagine the headlines. It will be bigger than Hardik Pandya’s move. He moved from Gujarat Titans back to Mumbai, which although wasn’t big a surprise. But if Rohit moves from Mumbai to join his rivals in RCB…oh my god! I don’t think there is an option there. I do not see a possibility of MI leaving Rohit. I will give that zero or 0.1 percent chance,” he added.

Speaking of Rohit’s future during the Indian Premier League 2024 season MI Head Coach Mark Boucher revealed that “To be honest, there hasn’t been many conversations about Rohit’s future at all. I spoke to him last night or the night before, just to do a little review of the season. For me, he’s a master of his destiny. It’s a big auction next season. Who knows what’s going to happen? We’ll just have to take each day as it comes,” he added.

Mumbai did have a forgettable 2024 campaign finishing 10th on the table. This publication earlier reported that senior members of the struggling Indian Premier League side Mumbai Indians have questioned the functioning of the team under captain Hardik Pandya. The Indian Express understands that MI’s key players recently conveyed to the coaching staff that there was a lack of buzz in the dressing room and the reason was Hardik’s leadership style.

An MI official said this wasn’t a leadership crisis but more of a sign that a team that was used to Rohit’s captaincy for the last 10 years was still coming to terms with the change of guard. “These are regular teething problems for a team that sees leadership change. This happens in sports all the time,” he said.
