How often do you feel the urge to pee? Are you someone who makes frequent visits to the loo, to relieve your bladder? Or is it the other way around? Well if you are thinking why does it matter, it surely does. While the frequency of your pooping is quite debatable and relies on several factors, the same can’t be said about urination. The frequency of your urination can tell a lot about your health.

Your bathroom habits might reveal more about your health than you think. The frequency of urination can indicate whether your body is functioning well or if there’s a potential issue that needs your attention.

On average, a healthy adult urinates anywhere between 6-7 times in 24 hours. According to experts, peeing between 4 to 10 times a day is also considered normal, if the person is healthy and happy. Similarly, at night normally you should be peeing once or none. Frequent visits to the toilet at night could signal an issue. The frequency of peeing varies in children.
The frequency of peeing can also change, based on the hormonal changes, pressure on the bladder. In pregnant women, temporary

bladder control problems are common. They usually have high frequency up to 8 weeks after giving birth.
The frequency of your urination also depends on how much fluid you drink in a day. Another factor that affects the

is the kind of fluid you take. Certain medications, such as those used to treat high blood pressure, can increase urination frequency. Such medicines are called diuretics.

  • Increased fluid intake: The simple fact is that drinking more water beverages like caffeine or alcohol can lead to more frequent urination.
  • Urinary Tract Infection (UTI): If you feel a burning sensation down there while urinating it could be a sign of UTI.
  • Diabetes: Peeing too often could be a symptom of uncontrolled blood sugar.
  • Overactive bladder: If you have the urge to urinate very often, even when your bladder isn’t full, and have very little amount when you pee, it may be because your bladder is overactive.
  • Pregnancy: In pregnant women, the hormonal changes and pressure on the bladder will lead to frequent urination.

What does less urination frequency signal?

If you are urinating less than usual it can indicate:

  • Dehydration: If you are not drinking enough water, your urine will be concentrated and the visits to the loo will decrease. This is an indication of dehydration.
  • Kidney issues: Some conditions such as kidney stones or infections might alter normal urination.
  • Urinary retention: In some people, due to prostate issues or nerve-related conditions, urinary retention happens. This leads to difficulty in emptying the bladder.

When to seek medical advice?
It is best to seek medical advice if you notice a sudden, drastic change in the urination frequency. A healthy adult’s urine is light yellow in colour. Any changes could indicate an underlying condition. Similarly, if you experience any pain or discomfort while urinating, or find blood in your urine, you can talk to your doctor.

How to keep your bladder healthy and happy?

  • Drink 8-10 glasses of water daily.
  • Limit beverages such as caffeine
  • Alcohol consumption can disrupt your peeing frequency. Try to avoid or reduce the amount.
  • Doing pelvic floor exercises can strengthen bladder control.
