FIDE World Chess Championship 2024, Game 9 Singapore Live Updates, Gukesh D vs Ding Liren: The world champion from China and his teenage challenger from India are back at the board for the ninth installment of their riveting battle for the World Chess Championship crown.

After eight hard-fought games at the FIDE World Championship, Ding Liren and Gukesh are level on four points each with both players having won a single game so far.

While Ding Liren had won the first game of the World Championship, it was Gukesh who has tasted victory most recently.

Game 7 and 8 of the World Championship have seen wild see-saw battles.

A very paradoxical dynamic has emerged in the match with Ding Liren not wanting to push for a win even when he is in a better position and Gukesh refusing to play for a draw — twice now — when he is in a worse position. This has earned Gukesh praise from chess legends like Magnus Carlsen and the Polgar sisters, Susan and Judit.

Some of the world’s elite grandmasters like Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura have a theory about why Ding Liren has been playing for draws at the World Chess Championship.

Ding Liren, a world-class chess player, temporarily left the board during a crucial game against D Gukesh. He returned to check if Gukesh had made the obvious move, which would have led to a draw. When he saw that Gukesh was still thinking, he went back to his lounge, seemingly confident of a draw. However, by offering Gukesh a lifeline, Ding gave his opponent a chance to potentially salvage the game. (Read more from Amit Kamath)
