FIDE World Chess Championship 2024, Game 4 Singapore Live Updates, Gukesh D vs Ding Liren: World Champion Ding Liren and Gukesh will resume their battle for the world champion’s crown after their first rest day in the best-of-14 contest.

Gukesh had managed to level scores at 1.5-1.5 in game 3 by inflicting a defeat on time on the world champion from China, who’s defending his throne against the teenager from Chennai.

In Game 4, Ding Liren starts with white pieces. The second game of the Ding Liren vs Gukesh clash, where Ding was playing with white for the first time in this contest, had ended with a 23-move draw.

So far it’s only the game where Gukesh has played with white pieces that have led to decisive results.

Ding goes out of book to test Gukesh

Buoyed by the first-round victory of Monday, world champion Ding Liren reached into his bag of tricks and pulled out a new one on the first move. Playing with white, he pushed his pawn to e4 – the most common first move in chess with white. Bobby Fischer, who almost exclusively played this opening move in his career, called 1.e4 as the ‘best by test’.

But Ding wasn’t going to play the orthodox game after forcing a win in the opener. On Monday as well, he’d sprung the unconventional French Defence with black. (READ MORE)
