Australia captain Pat Cummins could be in doubt for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan. Australian media reported that Pat Cummins’ participation at the tournament was under a cloud after the ace pacer underwent a scan on his sore ankle.

Pat Cummins bowled 167 overs across the five Tests against India, which was the most by an Australian bowler in the series.

Australia last won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2009, Since then, only India and Pakistan have claimed the title in the two editions held since then.

Cummins is already a confirmed miss from Australia’s Test tour of Sri Lanka. It must be noted that Pat Cummins opted out from the Sri Lanka tour due to the birth of his child.

Australia announced their squad for the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, where Steven Smith was named as the captain instead of Pat Cummins.

Cricket Australia’s statement on Pat Cummins

Cricket Australia confirmed on Thursday that Cummins was experiencing pain in his ankle.

A report in cricket.com said that Cricket Australia officials are “unsure about the severity of the injury, or whether he will be fit to return for Australia’s first match in the Champions Trophy in Pakistan on February 22”.

The report also quoted Australia’s chief selector George Bailey saying: “We’ll have to wait and see when that scan comes back and see how it’s tracking. There’s a little bit of work to do. We’ll probably get a bit more information around where that’s at.”
