The nose is a very delicate body part and it has numerous blood vessels in it. Even a little pressure on your nose will lead to fracture or nerve damage. An Idaho-based otolaryngologist Dr Don J Beasley said that it is not really safe to wax or tweeze nose hair.
He noted that if the nose hair is waxed improperly, it may increase the risk of infection and even cause nasal cellulitis. Waxing or tweezing nose hair is generally discouraged by ENT doctors for several reasons.
Why and how is nose hair important?
Nose hair acts as a filter and traps dust, allergens, and pathogens in the air before they enter the respiratory system. If this protective barrier is removed, it can increase the risk of infections and cause irritation or harm to the respiratory system.
Not just dust particles, but nostril hairs also help us from other irritants like strong smells, small insects, or flies. When nose hairs are triggered it gives a reflexive sneeze, pushing out the unwanted or new particle.
It also helps in keeping the moisture level intact in the nasal passage. Without nose hair, it can become too dry making the process of breathing a little difficult.
The harm of waxing and tweezing
While many feel that the hair in their nose is obstructing and makes them not look groomed, they opt to wax and it gives a long-lasting result. However, because of waxing, the entire filter in the nasal canal is removed which leads to nasal vestibulitis and nasal abscess. Waxing breaks the barrier that stops the infection from spreading and creates more opportunities for the bacteria to deeply affect the tissues.
Also, hot wax can burn the tissue lining and top layer of the skin making the nasal passage become very sensitive. Apart from waxing, tweezing or plucking the nose hair completely will cause harm to the highly sensitive blood vessels. Pulling hair from these nostrils can create small wounds or microtears in the skin and can also infect the hair follicle.
The serious outcome
Tweezing or waxing nose hair can be painful because of the sensitive nature of the nose and it might even lead to swelling or irritation in the nasal passages. The nose also has veins that are connected to the brain and eye and in worse cases, it can even become a life-threatening situation like cavernous sinus thrombosis.
Instead of waxing or tweezing nose hair, you can use trimmers to reduce the visibility of nose hair without removing them completely.
