Amy Schumer has recently opened up about how internet criticism prompted her to seek a diagnosis of
Cushing syndrome
. During her appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, the 43-year-old comedian-actor revealed that though she mostly ignores online comments about her swollen face, a doctor’s comment led her to re-think.
“Doctors were chiming in in the comments and they were, like, ‘No, no … something’s really up. Your face looks so crazy,'” Schumer recalled.
Shortly she sought the help of medical professionals, and was diagnosed with a rare disorder called Cushing syndrome.
“I feel reborn. While I was doing press on camera for my Hulu show [Life & Beth], I was also in MRI machines four hours at a time, having my veins shut down from the amount of blood drawn and thinking I may not be around to see my son grow up. So finding out I have the kind of Cushing that will just work itself out and I’m healthy was the greatest news imaginable,” she told the News Not Noise newsletter in 2014.
She added, “Thank you so much for everyone’s input about my face! I’ve enjoyed feedback and deliberation about my appearance as all women do for almost 20 years. And you’re right it is puffier than normal right now.”

What is Cushing syndrome?
Cushing syndrome aka Cushing’s syndrome is a disorder that occurs when the body makes too much of the stress hormone cortisol over a long period of time. According to the National Health Service (NHS) UK, though this condition is uncommon, it mostly affects people who have been taking steroid medicine, especially steroid tablets, for a long time. This is because steroids contain a synthetic version of cortisol. In rare conditions it also causes the body to produce too much cortisol.

Symptoms
The signs and symptoms can either appear suddenly or gradually.
- increased fat on your chest and tummy, but slim arms and legs
- Fat build-up on the back of your neck and shoulders, known as a ‘buffalo hump’
- a red, puffy, rounded face
Other symptoms:
- skin that bruises easily
- stretch marks appear large and purple
- weakness in your upper arms and thighs
- reduced sex drive and fertility problems
- depression and mood swings
