Earlier in the month, Gukesh Dommaraju became the youngest player in the history of chess to win the world championship after the 18-year-old defeated 32-year-old Ding Liren. In 2025, Gukesh will face India’s Arjun Erigaisi, Norwegian Magnus Carlsen twice, and his idol Vishwanathan Anand once.

Tata Steel Chess 2025 (January 7-February 2)
The 2025 calendar year starts with a Tata Steel chess tournament. Gukesh has been a familiar face in the tournament and lost the final last year to China’s Wei Yi. He will Erigaisi and another Indian player R Praggnanandhaa in the competition.
Freestyle Chess Grandslam 2025 (February 7-February 14)
Gukesh will participate in the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour. The tour will be held in Germany (Weissenhaus), India(Delhi), France (Paris), the USA (New York), and South Africa (Cape Town). In this competition, Gukesh will face his idol Vishwanathan Anand alongside Carlsen.
“I’m looking forward to the challenge,” said Gukesh who debuted in the freestyle competition in 2024.
Nine of the 10 players for the competition have been decided, and the remaining player will be selected after an open qualification on Chess.com starting on January 4.
Norway Chess 2025 (May 26-June 6)
The teenager will then have the prospect of playing in the esteemed Norway Chess 2025 event, which will take place in Stavanger. Alongside Wei Yi, Gukesh will face Magnus Carlsen and Arjun. Gukesh did not participate in the competition last year.
Gukesh had competed in the Norway Chess 2023 event though, where he had finished third. That event was one of the first ones where Gukesh and his current trainer Grzegorz Gajewski had worked together. It’s a partnership that has proven incredibly fruitful for the Indian prodigy, leading him to winning the Candidates and now becoming the youngest world champion in history.
