Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said that the club getting eliminated from the revamped league stage of the Champions League was very much a possibility after the English side threw away a 2-0 lead against Paris Saint Germain (PSG), only to lose 4-2.
This puts City at 25th in the table which is an elimination spot with the teams ending the first stage of the league in the 25-36 positions set to be go home without even a Europa spot. In order for City to sneak into the play-offs, they will need to win the final match against Club Brugge while also hoping that the other results go their way.
“We have the last chance at home to Brugge and hopefully we can qualify. It could happen, if we don’t win we don’t deserve it. It’s always a difficult tie, this is the reality, we haven’t got enough points and we have to accept it. We have to do what we have to do,” Guardiola said.
“We could not cope. When one team is better I have no problem accepting it. Now we prepare for Chelsea and the final match against Club Brugge. We need to beat them. This is what we have to do, survive and try to move forward. I know the players are trying and they have doubts but when a team is better you have to accept it,” he added.
In the match, PSG clawed back from two goals down to stun Manchester City 4-2 in the Champions League on Wednesday and leave the English club outside the playoff places and in danger of elimination.
Goals from PSG’s Ousmane Dembele, Bradley Barcola, Joao Neves and Goncalo Ramos turned the match on its head after City had taken a 2-0 lead early in the six-goal second half.
Substitute Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland struck in the 50th and 53rd minutes for City, but home fans braving torrential rain at Parc des Princes were treated to a brilliant comeback.
