Indian cricketer Shafali Verma has slammed 197 runs from just 115 balls during the quarter-final of ongoing Senior Women’s One-Day Trophy between Haryana and Bengal.

Shafali’s captain’s knock helped Haryana to pile on 390 runs from 50 overs which Bengal chased down to create the record for the highest chase in the tournament.

Earlier Shafali was dropped from ,India’s squads against Australia in T20Is and ODIs. The 20-year-old, who has had a dismal series at home against New Zealand, where she managed only 56 runs in three innings has been shown the door by the women’s selection committee.

“I can only talk about the team, (the) team is here and what (all) things we can do to win this series. Regarding Shefali or any other player, (it is) better to ask the right persons,” Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur replied when asked about Shafali’s exclusion.

The 20-year-old has played 85 T20Is, scored 2045 runs with an average of 25.56, and managed to score 10 half-centuries.

Flatter to decieve in ODI’s

Shafali rise to the top of India’s batting order was almost seamless. Her hard-hitting capabilities and manic scoring rates charmed a side that has lacked the same pomp and charisma of its larger opponents in Australia and England.

However, three years since her ODI debut, the 20-year-old has featured in a World Cup and played 25 games as an opener but has yet to translate herself into a bonafide match-winner.

India had run out of patience with Shafali’s lack of runs during the ODIs against Australia in December 2023. Still, the right-hander recently returned to the top of the order against South Africa with Yastika Bhatia out injured.

Since her ODI debut in June 2021, Shafali has totaled only 644 runs in 29 innings at a 23.00 average. They are the second-worst returns among all openers who have fared in at least 20 innings in the period.
