Nitish Kumar Reddy on Friday has showed why the selectors were right to have a punt on him in the opening Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at Perth’s Optus Stadium.
Reddy walked in to bat when India were reeling at 73 for and the debutant ended up being the top scorer for India with his 41 and it was 48-run eighth wicket stand with Rishabh Pant (37), which helped India reach 150 in their first innings.
Reddy, 21, hammered six fours and a six off 59 balls and took the attack to offspinner Nathan Lyon as he twice hit him down the ground and reverse swept in quick succession. He then parried Cummins behind the wicketkeeper for a six before holding out to deep mid-wicket where Khawaja took a running outfield catch. Two balls before, Khawaja dropped Reddy as he skied Cummins.

On Day 2, the young Indian all-rounder revealed how a big tattoo on his arm has inspired him over the years.
“The tattoo shows the warrior and tiger,” Reddy told 7Cricket.
“Whenever I see the tattoo, I just want to feel like you’re the warrior when you’re playing in the centre.
“So when a tiger makes his territory in the jungle, so it doesn’t allow any other animal or any other thing to come in that. So that’s how I want to feel. Like when you’re in the centre, you need to be like you’re the king. So that’s how I want to be,” he added.
On Friday at the press conference, Nitish Kumar Reddy had explained the chat he has had with the head coach Gautam Gambhir, on the eve the Test.
“Look, they might target you with bouncers but take a few blows on the body. It’s fine. Take some bullets for your country,” Gambhir told Reddy.
