Who says chess players are always serious? A new ad featuring the youngest world champion in chess history, Gukesh, and five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand portrays the trailblazing chess duo from India in a funny light.
The ad shows Gukesh, who defeated Ding Liren to become the 18th world champion in the world in Singapore last month, getting a tattoo on his arm. Anand, meanwhile, sits there in the tattoo studio asking him about what it feels like to become a world champion.
While lamenting that too many people ask him about touching the World Chess Championship trophy, the teenager tells Anand that he can touch the trophy if he wants.
At this, Anand retorts: “Touch? Mere paas paanch hain! (I have five of those myself). Do you want to touch four more?”
The 18-year-old then tells Anand in the ad — which is for e-commerce company Myntra — how he feels like everyone should get their “iconic moments inked”.
“Nahi yaar, mere dono haath bhar jaayenge (No man, both my arms will be covered if I did that),” Anand says.
Anand tells the youngster that he needs his help to connect with Gen Z kids and learn the lingo.
“Sir nobody can teach this especially at your age,” says Gukesh in the video before correcting himself quickly “… at your stature, I meant. The thing is you need to know pop culture!”
At this, Anand jumps to his feet and poses like Michael Jackson and says “I know Michael Jackson.”
That’s when Gukesh advices him to buy “Gen Z” clothes from the e-commerce site so that kids “connect with your drip at least if not your lingo”.
