Virat Kohli loves playing against Australia. Virat Kohli loves playing in Australia. On Sunday, the former India captain played another memorable knock Down Under to register his 7th Test century in the country. With his knock at the Optus Stadium in India’s second innings, Kohli went past Sachin Tendulkar’s tally of 6 Test centuries in Australia, now the most by an Indian.

The overall record for the most Test centuries in Australia belongs to England’s Jack Hobbs, who has 9 to his name. Kohli is now joint second with Walter Hammond.

Another significant milestone that Kohli crossed was for most international centuries across all three formats combined — Hobbs held the record with the aforementioned 9 Test centuries, while the Indian superstar marked his 10th international century in the format, with three more in ODIs.

Kohli’s record in Australia in Tests now reads: 14 matches, 27 innings, 1457 runs, a highest score of 169 with an average of 56.03.

Festive offer

Jasprit Bumrah declared immediately after Kohli reached the century, with India finishing on 487/6, setting Australia a mammoth target of 534. There as a moment of confusion as Kohli wasn’t exactly sure if he had gone from 96 to 100 with a boundary, but once the umpire confirmed the boundary, Kohli lifted his arms up in the air with a sense of relief, soaking the adulation in, before acknowledging Anuskha Sharma in the stands.

This was Kohli’s second Test century in Perth as well, and 30th Test century overall, as he moves past Sir Don Bradman, and joining Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Matthew Hayden.

Earlier in the day, Yashasvi Jaiswal became the first Indian batter in Test cricket to make his first four centuries in the format to be 150+ scores. The only other cricketer to achieve that feat in Test cricket is South Africa’s Greame Smith. During the course of their opening stand, Jaiswal and KL Rahul also became the first ever Indian pair to record a 200+ opening stand in Australia.
