The domestic circuit of Indian cricket continues as the Vijay Hazare Trophy is set to begin from Saturday, following an action packed Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The 50-over format tournament will see the inclusion of multiple talents that often go under the radar, and also veterans and big names of the game.
Mohammed Shami: A bowler who has been in the spotlight lately with his performances in domestic cricket, makes the headlines once more. Mohammed Shami has been included in Bengal’s squad for the Vijay Hazare trophy, despite there being potential injury concerns. While he is rested for the tournament opener in order for the swelling in his knee to not get aggravated, Shami’s comeback showed why he has been an integral pillar of any team he has been a part of. At the Cricket World Cup 2023, Mohammad Shami had become the highest Indian wicket taker at the World Cup stage and will be looking to recover quickly and bring in the same performances. BCCI too would keep a close eye on Shami, to make a decision on his inclusion back into the Indian side.
Excellent comeback 💥@MdShami11 bowled an impressive spell of 4/54 on his comeback, playing for Bengal against Madhya Pradesh in the #RanjiTrophy match in Indore 👌👌

Shreyas Iyer: After leading Mumbai to their second Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title, Shreyas Iyer will be hoping the team comes into the tournament carrying the same mentality and momentum. Shreyas Iyer had a decent outing in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, scoring a century and half-century which was followed by a few cameos. He had performed exceptionally well at the Cricket World Cup in 2023 at No. 4, scoring 530 runs, with an average of 66.25. He even scored two back-to-back centuries, coming against Netherlands and New Zealand, and three half centuries.
Ishan Kishan: The wicket-keeper batsman has not been in the best of forms recently, but at an international stage, he has proved on multiple occasions that he is a force to reckon with. He has 933 ODI runs in 24 innings, with a batting average of 42.40. His most notable innings came in the ODI against Bangladesh in which he scored a quick fire 210 in 131 balls. He was earlier picked by the SunRisers Hyderabad at the IPL 2025 Mega Auction.
Suryansh Shedge: The young gun who played an important role in Mumbai’s quest to win the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, has been named in Mumbai’s squad for the Vijay Hazare trophy. Shedge showed great intent and a fearless approach to his batting, and went on to win the Man of the Match award in the final of SMAT. he came into bat with wickets falling in regular intervals, but that didn’t stop him from playing his natural game and scored 36(15) which eventually saw Mumbai go over the line.

Rajat Patidar: Rajat Patidar was the second highest run scorer of the tournament behind Mumbai’s Ajinkya Rahane, and led the Madhya Pradesh side to the finals. Time and Time again, he helped the side put up runs on the board as he consistently put up half-centuries showing an aggressive approach. In ten innings, he scored five half-centuries, two of them coming in the semi-final and final. His 66* helped Madhya Pradesh cross the line and reach the finals, but his 81* in the finals went in vain as Mumbai pipped the Patidar led team. While he has played just one ODI, his List A career so far has seen him score 1985 runs in 57 innings, and has a batting average of 98.80. With the Champions Trophy coming up next year and a yearn to get back to the Indian side, Patidar will look to make the most out of this tournament.
Arshdeep Singh: With the ability to swing the ball both ways, at disciplined line and lengths, Arshdeep Singh will be a bowler that the openers will have to be wary of. Though he has just eight ODI matches to his name, Arshdeep managed to get a five-wicket haul against South Africa, and became the first Indian fast bowler to do so. He has an economy of 5.05 in ODIs, and is even lower in List A at 4.85.
