While Tyson Fury suffered a loss against Oleksandr Usyk in the fight for the undisputed heavyweight title in May early this year, the British boxer will face the Ukrainian boxer for a rematch for the heavyweight title in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, this Saturday. With the ‘Gypsy King’ 36-year-old boxer looking to avenge his defeat in May at the same venue , the British boxer has been training in Malta for the fight. Fury’s team’s officials on the condition of anonymity had shared with The Telegraph about how the British boxer has trained in a compound ‘prison like’.
“Fury has been sparring with a group of young southpaws ahead of his fight with Oleksandr Usyk They entered a camp within a compound, which insiders have told Telegraph Sport was “like prison”. There, they undertook what has been described as the most intense training regime of Fury’s career,” the Telegraph reported.
The newspaper also reported that Fury has been training in sparring sessions with five southpaws boxers imitating the ring tactics of Usyk and is undergoing sessions known as ‘Shark Tanking’, a method where fresh fighters continually switch in and out. The five boxers are Kevin Lerena, Zhan Kossobutskiy, Fernely Feliz Jnr, Alexis Barrière and Aleksei Dronov, the last three boxers who are undefeated in their career according to the newspaper. During the bout against Usyk in May, Fury was injured during sparring and it resulted in postponement of the bout by three months. “It has definitely been a better camp with no disruptions. The cut eye last time was unavoidable [Fury was injured in sparring, causing the first fight to be rescheduled from mid February to May] and we just dealt with it as best we could.
“But Malta has been great. We started the strength work early, pre-camp. We have had four months of it. A bit more volume early on, three times a week. For example, there was a shoulder issue in the last camp, but Tyson is now reaching new marks: 500kg leg press, and single arm bench presses of 50kg. We have worked on greater strength and specific explosive movements for this fight.” Kristian Blacklock, Fury’s strength and conditioning coach told the Telegraph Sport.
In his professional career, Fury had scored 35 wins out of 35 bouts before he suffered the first defeat of his career against Usyk in May. It was a split decision with one judge scoring the fight 114-113 for Fury but overruled by scores of 114-113 and 115-112 by the other two judges. Till that time, Fury was the first unified heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis defeated Evander Holyfield in 1999. Fury and Usyk had signed a two-match deal in 2023. Prior to coming to Riyadh, Fury’s regime in Malta saw him taking 5000 calories a day and deep strength and conditioning training followed by inclusion of lean meats in his diet as per The Telegraph.
“All his strength and conditioning numbers are very good and very high. Tyson loves training and weight training, I could not have asked more from him, and I know his [boxing] trainer SugarHill [Steward] feels the same. He loves to fight and he is determined to win. We have not had to work around injuries this time – there are always little niggles that all fighters have – and he is coming to this in great shape. The loss has made him even more determined. He has given heart and soul in this camp, working through his physical regime, running the hills in the region, and Malta, in camp, has been a case of train, eat, sleep. And repeat,” added Blacklock.
