Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealth’s insurance division, was shot in the chest and died outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown New York on Wednesday morning. According to the New York Post, the police have described the incident as a targeted attack. The 50-year-old had arrived at the hotel for a meeting at around 6:46 am when a man wearing a mask fired at him repeatedly before running away.
After being taken in serious condition to the neighboring Mt. Sinai Hospital, the insurance CEO was declared dead. The investigation into the case is still underway, and police have not yet made any arrests.
Details regarding the suspect’s appearance have been made public by the police. They described him as a white man in a cream-colored jacket, black footwear, and a black face mask. According to reports, he is also toting a grey backpack.
According to UnitedHealth CEO Andrew Witty, the company’s investor day on Wednesday was canceled early because of “a very serious medical situation” involving one of its staff members.
The suspect was seen allegedly waiting for Thompson while strolling close to the hotel, according to witnesses who spoke to The New York Post. According to the authorities, he started shooting at him from a distance when he saw him, and several rounds struck Thompson in the chest.
According to authorities, the masked man then escaped the area by jumping on a bike.
About an hour after the scheduled investor event at the Hilton on Wednesday began, UnitedHealth Group Chief Executive Andrew Witty entered the stage to say that the rest of the program would be canceled.
Andrew Witty, CEO of UnitedHealth, stated, “I’m afraid we’re going to have to bring to a close the event today because we’re dealing with a very serious medical situation with one of our team members.”
The inquiry is still underway, and no one has been arrested as of yet. According to the department, the identification of the deceased is currently undergoing appropriate family notification.
