Nigeria stunned New Zealand by two runs in Match No. 11 of the ongoing Women’s U-19 World Cup in Malaysia.
It is Nigeria’s maiden win at their first-ever Women’s U19 World Cup campaign.
The match went down to the wire. New Zealand needed five runs to win from the last ball and four to tie. Tash Wakelin pulled Lilian Ude to deep mid-wicket but could only manage two and was run out while attempting the third run, triggering jubilant celebrations from the Nigerian players.
In a rain-curtailed match, Nigeria posted 65 for 6 in 13 overs. Captain Piety Lucky (18) and Lilian Ude (19) were the standout contributors for Nigeria.
For New Zealand, Anika Tauwhare (1/6), Hannah O’Connor (1/11), Anika Todd (1/18), Tash Wakelin (1/6), and Hannah Francis (1/4) shared the wickets.
In reply, New Zealand got off to a poor start, losing openers Emma McLeod (3) and Kate Irwin cheaply (0). Eve Wolland (14), Anika Todd (19), and captain Tash Wakelin (18) tried their best but couldn’t guide their team to victory.
For Nigeria, Peace Usen (1/5), Adeshola Adekunle (1/14), and Piety Lucky (1/8) each claimed a wicket.
Nigeria’s Piety Lucky was adjudged Player of the Match for her all-round brilliance.
