Kiwi pace-spearhead Trent Boult on Saturday confirmed that the ongoing T20 World Cup will be his last for the Black Caps.
“Speaking on behalf of myself this will be my last T20 World Cup, so yeah, that’s all I have to say,” Boult told reporters.
Boult’s comments come a day after New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson assured that following an early exit from the competition, there wasn’t going to be a transition phase with multiple senior players calling it quits.
“No, I think there’s still guys that will be here for some time,” Williamson had responded to the question.
Boult, who made his T20I debut in 2013, 81 wickets to his name in 60 outings for New Zealand in the shortest format. Two of those came in the win against Uganda.
On the team not making it to the next round, Boult said, “We’re devastated to not qualify. We’ve been outplayed earlier in the tournament and yeah, we haven’t qualified for good reason so it’s unfortunate but that’s how T20 cricket goes.”
It is the first time in the history of the competition that New Zealand have been unable to progress into the second round. Having featured in the semi-finals thrice, the Black Caps also finished runner-ups in 2021.
Their final game of the group stages will be against Papua New Guinea on Monday, June 17 in Tarouba, Trinidad.
