After being dropped from Mumbai’s Vijay Hazare Trophy squad on Tuesday, out-of-favour batter Prithvi Shaw expressed his disappointment on social media.
Shaw, who has been under scrutiny for his form and fitness since the start of this domestic season, was part of Mumbai’s title-winning Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaign recently before the selectors dropped the batter for the second time this season.
The 25-year-old Shaw, who last featured for India three years ago, highlighted his commanding 50-over record to question his exclusion. Shaw, who went unsold in the IPL Mega Auction in Jeddah last month, failed to light up the SMAT 2024 tournament, scoring only 197 runs in nine games with a best score of 49.
However, Shaw’s List A record over the years has stood out. The Mumbaikar possesses the fourth-best List A average among all Indian batters, at 55.72 in 65 games. It is only bettered by Ruturaj Gaikwad (58.16), Virat Kohli (57.05) and Cheteshwar Pujara (57.01) among Indian batters.
In the 2020-21 Vijay Hazare Trophy season, Shaw led Mumbai to their fourth title. Besides his leadership duties, Shaw dominated the batting charts with 827 runs, including a career-best 227.
Shaw’s reaction on Instagram.
‘Tell me God, what more do I have to see.. if 65 innings, 3399 runs at an average of 55.7 with a strike rate of 126, I’m not good enough… but I will keep my faith in you and hopefully people believe in me still.. cause I will come back for sure.. OM SAI RAM,” wrote Shaw in his Instagram story.
In October, Shaw was dropped from Ranji Trophy games after Mumbai’s Irani Cup triumph, citing he needs to improve his fitness.
After Mumbai recently won the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy beating Madhya Pradesh in Bengaluru, Mumbai skipper Shreyas Iyer was asked about Shaw.
“We can’t babysit anyone, right? He has played so much of cricket. Everyone has given him inputs. At the end of the day, it’s his job to figure out things for himself. And he has also done it in the past. It’s not that he hasn’t. He has to focus. He has to sit back, put a thinking cap on. He will get the answer by himself. No one can force him to do anything,” remarked Iyer while acknowledging Shaw’s immense skill and God-gifted talent.
