You can now take a simple test in the comfort of your home to check if you are aging healthily. According to a
Mayo Clinic study
, researchers suggest basic tests that can identify if you are
aging well
.
A study was conducted with 40 people below the age of 50 and they underwent various tests related to their balance, walking ability, grip, and knee strength. Researchers found that being able to stand on one leg for more than 30 seconds is an indicator of good health and that they are at low risk of falling while living alone.
Healthy signs of aging
Balancing is one of the powerful indicators that shows if your body is aging healthily. The balance in the body helps the elders from not falling and this emphasises that a good balance is a result of strong muscles and joints in the body and how well it is coordinated with the brain.
Standing on one leg makes sure that your leg muscles, ankles, core, and joints are strong and flexible. Additionally, good balance in legs enables quicker reactions and the necessary adjustments to prevent a fall.
Balance is the primate function to check while aging as it involves both muscles and the nervous system in the body. The sensory system keeps check of their daily habits like walking, climbing stairs, and getting out of chairs and bed on their own.
Here’s how you can test your balance
While balancing for 30 seconds marks a safe territory for elders to live alone, it is not just 30 seconds for young people. To find out if you are aging right and check if you are in good shape, try standing and balancing on one leg above 45 seconds. If you can do it with one leg, switch it with your other leg as well, so you can find out it is not just based on your balancing technique with your legs, but also that your muscles are healthy as well.
The study findings also mention that the duration of the uni pedal stance can change based on gender, weight, and other health restrictions.
Experts noted that apart from the one-leg balancing technique, tai chi, yoga can also help in the aging process in the right way. Yoga can keep your muscles flexible even at a later age.
