After D Gukesh’s impressive win over title holder Ding Liren in the World Chess Championship Game 14, grandmaster Susan Polgar explains how the 18-year-old Indian “overcame the adversity,” while the 32-year-old from China “eventually self-destructed.”

“D Gukesh overcame all adversity and challenges, and kept on the relentless pressure! Ding eventually self destructed and cracked,” she wrote on X.

Gukesh became the youngest chess world champion by beating defending champion Ding Liren of China on Thursday in a dramatic turn of events in the last game of a 14-game match in Singapore.

Gukesh won Thursday’s game with the black pieces after Ding wilted under pressure and blundered in what commentators considered to be a comfortable position, snatching the title with a final score of 7.5-6.5.

Susan on learning from the Game 14

Susan explains the learning from the final game as Gukesh made the most of Liren’s blunder.

“Time pressure can be lethal, even in a drawn endgame or harmless position.

“It is never over until the players shake hands. So players have to stay alert 100% of the time!

“Energy level and alertness have to be at peak level throughout the game, as well as the match. Therefore, physical, mental, and emotional fitness are ALL important!”

In one of her another post Susan says, Gukesh is yet to reach his peak.

“Gukesh displayed an incredible level of fighting spirit, nerves of steel, outstanding mental toughness, insane level of self confidence, etc., all qualities of a champion, and he just turned 18 at the end of May! He is also professional, mature, humble and always conducts himself with class!

“He is nowhere near his peak yet and he will only get better! This is exciting for chess and for India, the biggest chess loving country!

“He will also be an amazing Ambassador for Chess for years to come!

“The biggest congratulations to the new World Champion, his family, and the Indian chess community.”
