Smriti Mandhana created a new record in women’s ODI history in Perth on Wednesday, as she scored a century in the third match of the series against Australia. She has had a stellar 2024 in the 50-over format, as this was her fourth ODI century of the year. In the process, she became the first-ever batter to achieve this feat in women’s ODIs.
The previous record for the most centuries in a calendar year in women’s ODIs was three, shared by 7 other batters, including the South African captain Laura Wolvaardt this year. The others with three tons in a year are Meg Lanning (2016), Nat Sciver-Brunt (2023), Sophie Devine (2018), Sidra Amin (2022), Amy Satterthwaite (2016), Belinda Clark (1997).

In the home series against South Africa earlier this year, she had scored two centuries and a 90 in three matches. And in a series-winning performance recently against New Zealand, she scored her third century of the year, and in the process went past Mithali Raj for most centuries by an Indian in this format.
Mandhana, however, fell shortly after reaching her ton, scoring 105 off 109 balls with familiar foe in Ash Gardner dismissing her. The Aussie all-rounder has been a thorn in Mandhana’s flesh in the past, and this was the fifth time she has dismissed the Indian batter in this format (has also dismissed Mandhana 4 times in T20Is and once in Tests).
Earlier in the day, Australia survived a stellar spell from India pacer Arundhati Reddy to post a challenging 298 for six in the third and final Women’s ODI. Annabel Sutherland (110 off 95) led Australia’s recovery after Arundhati struck four times in quick succession for career-best figures in limited-overs cricket.
