As Pat Cummins led Australian ODI team completed a two-wicket over Mohammad Rizwan led Pakistan team in the first ODI of the three-match ODI series at MCG on Monday, the Australian ODI team matched the highest number of ODI wins against Pakistan. The defending world champions were playing in their first ODI match against Pakistan since last year’s ODI World Cup encounter at Bengaluru, which Australia won and Monday’s win saw the Australians matching West Indies’ record of most number of ODI wins against Pakistan with their 71st ODI win against Pakistan on Monday. West Indies had scored 71 wins out of 137 matches with India at the fifth spot in the list with 57 ODI wins against Pakistan in 135 matches.

The three-match ODI series happens to be the 12th ODI series between the two countries with Australia winning seven series and Pakistan winning four series since 1982, when the Zaheer Abbas led Pakistan ODI team scored a 2-0 win over Kim Hughes led Australian team during Australia’s tour of Pakistan. Out of the 109 ODI matches played between the two countries, three matches have not been completed with one tied match being the fourth match of the Benson & Hedges World Series played at Hobart ending in a tie.

Australia have won a total of 38 ODI’s while facing Pakistan at home while Pakistan have won six matches while playing at home. Playing in Pakistan, Australia have won seven ODI’s while Pakistan have won 17 ODI matches in Australia. At neutral venues, Australia have won 26 ODI’s while Pakistan have won 11 ODI’s.

Pakistan had won the last ODI series between the two countries by 2-1 with the Baba Azam led Pakistan side making a comeback after losing the first match of the series in Pakistan.

On Monday, Australia were in a spot of bother chasing a small target of 204 runs after Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins accounted for five wickets together. Cummins then played an unbeaten knock of 32 runs to guide Australia to a narrow two-wicket win. “Tonight we got it done, I always much prefer sitting in the changing room. It got a bit tighter than we’d have liked,” Cummins said post the match.
