The umpiring quality in the Ranji Trophy has been under scrutiny after a recent incident with Maharashtra batter Ankit Bawne who has been handed a one-match ban for showing dissent. The decision has been communicated to the side ahead of their sixth round of Ranji Trophy fixture against Baroda.
Bawne was involved in a controversial dismissal in the fifth round when he was given out to a catch by Services’ player Shubam Rohilla at slip for a ball bumped before going into the hands.
Bawne stood his ground and refused to walk back as the game was halted for 15 minutes. Match referee Amit Sharma and Maharashtra coach Sulakshan Kulkarni had to intervene to calm down the matters.
“Players are subject to fines and reprimand, what about proper assessment of umpires,” Kulkarni had said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo. “Why do the same erring umpires continue to officiate and play spoilsport? When there are blunders of this nature, the anger is justified.”
Umpires are a concern
Speaking to The Indian Express former player Manoj Tiwary did flag the issue, “Umpiring for me is the main concern. With all due respect, but the standard of umpiring is poor in domestic cricket.”
“The BCCI should think about how they can improve umpiring. It is not about one or two seasons but I have been witnessing this for a number of years now. There are big mistakes but there are some childish mistakes as well,” Tiwary added.
“If a player has to go through dope tests, it should be extended to domestic umpires. Many times I have seen umpires walking out to the middle while still nursing a hangover. The umpires have looked sleepy. How can he function properly in such a situation? Tiwary questioned.
“I asked, “Sir kya liye tha kal raat mein? (Sir, what did you drink last night?). The reply was: “I prefer whisky on the rocks.” And they laugh. BCCI should get the hearing and eyesight of every umpire checked before the start of each season,” Tiwary further added.
