Norway Chess, one of the world’s most prestigious chess tournaments hosted annually in Stavanger, will see Indian prodigy Praggnanandhaa in the six-player open category, facing off against some of the biggest names in the world like World No 1 Magnus Carlsen and current World Champion Ding Liren.

The 18-year-old Pragg is not the only Indian competing at the event: also joining him are Indian Grandmasters Koneru Humpy, Vaishali Rameshbabu, who will both compete in the women’s section at Norway Chess.

Pragg will pit his wits against some of the biggest names in chess: World No 1 Magnus Carlsen, current World Champion Ding Liren, World No 2 Fabiano Caruana, World No 3 Hikaru Nakamura and World No 6 Alireza Firouzja.

Koneru and Vaishali, meanwhile, will be part of an elite field that includes Women’s World Champion Ju Wenjun, World No 4 Lei Tingjie, World No 7 Anna Muzychuk and Pia Cramling.

The event has brought together some of the biggest names in the world after its inception in 2013.

Festive offer

This year the biggest draw at Norway Chess will be to see 18-year-old Praggnanandhaa take on Magnus Carlsen in the classical format. The duo had famously met in the longer version of the sport at the FIDE World Cup final, where Praggnanandhaa had lost to Magnus Carlsen, but had secured his spot at the Candidates chess tournament.

Before Norway Chess, Praggnanandhaa and Magnus Carlsen recently competed against each other at the Superbet Rapid and Blitz Poland, where the World No 1 had won the title despite a defeat to Pragg on the penultimate day. After the defeat to Praggnanandhaa, Magnus Carlsen said his “nervous system had just collapsed”.
