These days, a fascinating
optical illusion
is viral on all the social media platforms where an amazing black and gray stripey swirl reveals a totally buried hidden number. But here, that is not only challenging the person’s perceptions, but also gives incredibly interesting insight into how a human eye functions.
Shared on Twitter by the user @benonwine, the illusion asks viewers, “Do you see a number? If so, what number?” The puzzle has caused debate far and wide among people since many people state that they see different numbers than those others do.
The mystical swirl of the illusion has brought different kinds of responses from different puzzle lovers. One of the Twitter users confidently declared: “8452839, and I bet the right number has been found.”.
The first digit is the trickiest, it could be a 3, 6, or 8. I lean to 8. As another commenter said, “52839, it keeps changing.” A third said “3452839. One can very easily miss the 3 on the left and the 9 on the right but they exist.” Again, regardless of the creativity applied in interpreting it, allegedly the number inside the maze is 3452839.
The illusion relies on the principle of contrast sensitivity, which is an important aspect of visual function.
Contrast sensitivity
allows one to distinguish objects from their backgrounds, a skill essential in daily activities such as driving under low-visibility conditions, such as fog. A person with high contrast sensitivity is likely to rapidly and accurately identify all seven digits of the hidden number.
On the contrary, low contrast sensitivity is a symptom that may result in missing all the numbers and also an indication of possible diseases such as cataract or glaucoma.
This optical illusion not only entertained but explained how the human eye might interpret variable contrast and detail. It takes it a step further in giving more emphasis on the
visual health
and telling us how even the simplest of puzzles can say so much about the intricate workings of our eyes. Be it that one sees the whole number or only part of it, this swirl has proved to be an interesting test of perception, one which really caught people’s attention throughout the internet.
