Playing against New Zealand in Karachi, 48 years ago (1976), Pakistan’s legendary batter Javed Miandad became the youngest player to score a double ton in Test cricket at the age of 19 years and 140 days.
The pitch, which turned out to be a batting paradise, assisted him, and Miandad showed his attacking prowess with a magical knock against a New Zealand bowling attack led by the legendary Richard Hadlee.
Pakistan skipper Mushtaq Mohammad had won the toss and elected to bat first. Sadiq Mohammad and the experienced Majid Khan opening stand lasted for 147 runs before Majid Khan was dismissed. Zaheer Khan was also sent back quickly and the Kiwis suddenly had an upper hand.
That’s when the young Miandad walked in to salvage the innings for the home team. Miandad along with his skipper Mushtaq Mohammad gave solidity to the crumbling Pakistan batting order. The duo built a stunning partnership of 252 runs.
Miandad was ultimately dismissed by Richard Collinge after scoring 206 runs.
The match eventually ended in a draw, as New Zealand was able to match Pakistan’s batting. Although it may have ended without a result, it will always be remembered for Javed Miandad’s heroics and his first double century.
