Nimisha Priya case handled by Houthi militias, death sentence not ratified by President: Yemen Embassy

The Embassy of the Republic of Yemen has denied that President Dr. Rashid Al-Alimi ratified the death sentence for Malayali nurse Nimisha Priya.

In a communique on Monday (January 6, 2025), the Embassy addressed the recent reports regarding the case of Ms. Nimisha Priya, who is on a death row at the Central prison in Yemen’s capital Sanaa.

“The Yemeni government emphasizes that the entire case has been handled by the Houthi militias, and therefore, His Excellency Dr. Rashid Al-Alimi, Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council, Republic of Yemen has not ratified this judgment,” the statement said.

The case pertains to Ms. Nimisha Priya, a native of Palakkad, who was imprisoned for the alleged murder of Talal Abdo Mehdi, a Yemeni national in July 2017. She was sentenced to death by a trial court in Sanaa in 2020 and the Yemen’s Supreme Judicial Council had dismissed her appeal in November 2023 while keeping the option of paying blood money open.

The Ministry of External Affairs said on December 31, 2024, that the government is extending all help to Ms. Nimisha Priya. “We are aware of the sentencing of Ms. Nimisha Priya in Yemen. We understand that the family of Ms. Priya is exploring relevant options. The government is extending all possible help in the matter”, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.
