Neeraj Chopra has been named as the world’s best male javelin thrower of 2024 in a US athletics magazine rankings, winning the top spot over Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, who claimed a gold medal at the Paris Olympics in 2024.
Neeraj Chopra claimed a silver medal at the Paris Olympics with Nadeem taking home gold.
But Chopra still pipped the Pakistan thrower in the rankings released by the globally-renowned ‘Track and Field News’ magazine. Arshad Nadeem ended in fifth spot in the rankings. Ending second behind Neeraj Chopra is two-time world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada.
In 2023 as well, Neeraj Chopra had ended on top of the rankings in the ‘Track and Field News’ magazine charts.
The California-based magazine was founded in 1948. It calls itself ‘The Bible Of The Sport’ and publishes world rankings every year.
Explaining its criteria for picking Neeraj Chopra as the winner, the magazine explained: “Reigning leader Neeraj Chopra vs 2022’s winner Anderson Peters for the top spot was not clear-cut. Chopra didn’t score any Diamond League wins, but was at 3–2 narrowly ahead of Peters… Peters, for his part, picked up a trio of Diamond League wins. Razor-thin edge to the Indian for his better Paris placing.”
Neeraj Chopra was unable to reach his pre-season target — of breaching the 90m mark — in 2024.
Peters had claimed a bronze medal behind Nadeem and Chopra at the Paris Olympics. He claimed first place in three Diamond League meets in 2024 — in Lausanne, Zurich and Brussels.
Regarding Arshad Nadeem’s ranking, the Track and Field News magazine wrote: “What do you do with an Olympic gold medallist who had only one other meet, and finished 4th in that one? Thus it was decided that Arshad Nadeem could be no higher than No. 5 even though he climbed to No 6 on the all-time list.”
