Young Sam Konstas left a massive cricketing impact on the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after debuting in Melbourne. But it was the Sydney Test that was close to his heart.
Speaking to Triple M after Australia wrapped up the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series 3-1, the youngster spoke of why the Pink Test at Sydney was important. “It’s a special event for the McGrath Foundation, hopefully we spread more awareness and get the funds in because my cousin passed away with Leukemia and my grandpa with bowel cancer. So hopefully we can spread awareness and work towards a cure,” he told Triple M.
A total attendance of 8,37,879 was registered across the 5 Tests, while Day one’s crowd at the Sydney Cricket Ground was 47,998, the largest individual day attendance at the SCG against India, breaking the 2003/04 Day One crowd of 44,901. The Sydney Test has been celebrated as the Pink Test since 2009, in honour of Glen McGrath’s late wife Jane, who passed away after a battle with breast cancer in 2008, with the McGrath Foundation raising millions of dollars for the cause.
Indian players too donned white shirts with pink features for Day Three, while the Aussies had worn pink numbers on the backs of their shirts throughout the entire Test.
Konstas had an eventful Test and ended up with 2 wins from 2 outings. “It’s been quite special. To top it off with a win today was outstanding. I don’t think it’s kicked in yet, hopefully in the next few days it will, soak it in, reflect on it, but it’s been awesome,” Konstas told Triple M post the win. “The team’s been outstanding to me, just letting me play my natural game. Pat Cummins is a great leader and hopefully we can keep going on.”
Konstas wasn’t sure yet if he would get picked for the Sri Lanka tour. “But obviously, adapting to different conditions, maybe we’ll find a new Sam. I think so, but time will tell,” he said.
