Liverpool coach Arne Slot praised Mohamed Salah for his recent performances that have helped the club retain top spot in the Premier League table but the Egyptian attacker has said that contract talks were still far apart between him and the club.
Salah had earlier spoken about his situation with Liverpool and had confessed that at one point he was more ‘out than in’ at the club where he won the English Premier League title.
Asked about his future following Liverpool’s 5-0 win over West Ham United, Salah told Sky Sports: “No, we are far away from that [contract] and I don’t want to put anything in the media. The only thing on my mind is I want Liverpool to win the league and I want to be part of that.
“I will do my best for the team to win the trophy. There is a few other teams catching up with us and we need to stay focused and humble and go again.”
The 32-year-old is not the only one with a contract coming to an end. Liverpool are also dealing with Trent Alexander Arnold and Virgil Van Djik’s contracts coming to an end. Despite being top of the league, securing the trio who comprise the spine of the Merseyside club could be pivotal to their next few seasons.
“I hope it’s a little bit of gameplay in terms of the negotiations (with Liverpool),” said former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy to Match of the Day. “Every Liverpool supporter wants him to stay and I’ve got a really positive feeling that he’ll stay and they’ll get it done.
“They’re just taking their time – these things do when you’re talking about huge amounts of money. He’s the most important player Liverpool have at the moment. They’ve got to get it signed off.”
