Michael Vaughan expects the Australia quicks to target India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal with “barrage of bouncers” in the second Test, which starts from Friday in Adelaide.
Former England captain said Australian bowlers were not aggressive enough against Yashasvi Jaiswal in the Perth Test, where the southpaw has scored a match-winning 161 in the second innings and helped India win the Test match by 295 runs.
“Yashasvi Jaiswal is a wonderful young talent, but you go back five years, 10 years, or 15 to 20 years and when a young player came to Australia with a great reputation, the Australians would just pepper them,” Vaughan said on Fox Cricket’s podcast The Follow On.
“I had it in 2002. They bombed me for about an hour. You know, ‘Can you play the short ball with all the fielders around the bat, with a couple on the boundary? Go on, try and play Brett Lee or Andy Bichel, Jason Gillespie, Glenn McGrath, Steve Waugh, with a load of fielders chirping in your ear.’
“I know it’s a different era, a different kind of team and a different way of playing, but you can be ultra aggressive without chirp, (but) with body language. I was surprised that they didn’t go aggressively at the young kid from Mumbai, who plays great and has got all the shots.”
Vaughan has pointed out that the Indian opener do look vulnerable against the short-pitch bowling.
“Every time it got into his right shoulder, he’s kind of flapping a little bit. And it took Marnus (Labuschagne), actually, to get the ball in hand and say, ‘Well, I will bowl him a few bouncers’. And the bouncer tactic can actually work.
“It worked against England. And I’ll say to Australia, you know, they bowled England out at Lords with the bouncer tactics. How many times have they reverted to that since? Not many. They tried it at Old Trafford where they didn’t get it right, and the ball was flying everywhere, and Zak Crawley put on a bit of a master class.
“But … they haven’t tried it that many times, from what I remember, and when you’ve got a player like Yashasvi Jaiswal, number one, it’s a wicket taking option, number two, you’re going to restrict the scoring rate if you bowl it well, and number three, if you ask any batter in the world (if) they like being peppered for 40 minutes non-stop, there’s not many that really like it.
“Some play it better and some might say, ‘Oh, it’s a bit of a challenge and it’s quite fun’. But fundamentally, no-one likes to be peppered for a period of time. So, yeah, I would think we might see a bit of that from Australia this week.”
