In a rare interview, Magnus Carlsen’s wife Ella Victoria Malone has opened up about life with the World No 1 and offered up little details about their private life.
Ella and Carlsen got married in a private ceremony at Oslo’s Holmenkollen Chapel over the weekend. Ella revealed details of her first impressions of Magnus Carlsen.
“He was really sweet when we first met. He was very shy and nervous. It was very endearing. He is incredibly intelligent,” Ella Victoria Malone said on chess podcast Sjakksnakk, which is hosted by Magnus Carlsen’s close friends Odin Blikra Vea and Askild Bryn.
Ella Victoria Malone added: “He remembered my birthday immediately, which really flattered me. But it turns out he has a really good memory, so I am not sure! He remembers everyone’s birthday!”
The 26-year-old added that she got hooked onto chess after watching the popular Netflix documentary The Queen’s Gambit. She revealed that she has a rating of around 1100 on chess.com.

“Magnus is a breath of fresh air. I don’t think a lot of people know that. He’s just so authentic and unapologetically himself, and he inspires me, and I love that about him!” Ella added.
The World No 1 has a Norwegian mother and an American father. While she was born in Hong Kong, she spent a lot of her early childhood in Singapore, where she is currently a permanent resident. Ella has studied in the UK, the US, and Canada, and has lived in Norway for four-five years when she was younger.
There have been reports that Ella Victoria Malone will take a more active role in managing Magnus Carlsen’s professional commitments. Ella confirmed that in the interview.
She said she will manage Carlsen’s schedule besides being the point person for interviews with him, and tournament organisers. “It works really well. I am not just sitting around bored at the hotel twiddling my fingers and watching his games. We have a lot to do, and I love it,” she said.
