Lionel Messi made another stellar debut on Tuesday — on the stock markets.
The Argentine World Cup winner listed his property empire in the Spanish stock market, according to reports. The real estate investment trust made its debut on the bourses at 57.4 euros per share on the Portfolio Stock Exchange, an alternative market supervised by the Bank of Spain. It translated to a market capitalisation of 223 million euros, or $232.12 million, Reuters reported.
The current Inter Miami forward and former Barcelona legend is named as the chairman of the Edificio Rostower Socimi group. His wife Antonella Roccuzzo is the board’s vice president.
Founded in 2013, Messi’s company owns ‘seven hotels in Spain and Andorra, three office spaces and five apartments in Spain, as well as apartments in London and Paris’, Reuters reported, citing the documents filed.
The firm posted a 1.7 million euro loss in 2023. Most investments, it is reported, are in the Spanish region of Catalonia, where the 37-year-old Messi moved in 2000 when he was 13 to join La Masia, Barcelona’s academy.
Messi lived there until 2021 when he unexpectedly left Barcelona to join Paris St Germain after the Catalan club said it could not afford to keep him because of the Spanish league’s financial fair play rules. From Paris, Messi joined the David Beckham-owned Inter Miami.
However, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has said he plans to return to live in Barcelona with his wife and three children after he retires from football.
