Former Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur coach Jose Mourinho is reportedly eyeing a return to the Premier League, where he claims to have ‘unfinished business.’

According to a report in The Guardian, the Portuguese coach is targetting the managerial role at Newcastle United, if current incumbent Eddie Howe leaves the Tyneside club.

The British publication reports that Mourinho has been in contact with Newcastle chairman Yasir al-Rumayyan ever since meeting him in a social capacity at the Saudi Arabian F1 Grand Prix in March, and his representatives are reaching out to the club and intermediaries to be kept in the loop about a potential opening at the club.

Howe is the first manager under Newcastle’s new Saudi Arabia-backed ownership, and within his first season, guided the club to qualification to the Champions League. But after finishing seventh in the Premier League last year, and failing to impress much this season where they stand in 11th place after 10 games, pressure is mounting on the British coach.

Mourinho is currently the coach of Turkish side Fenerbahce. The 61-year-old had joined Roma in the Serie A after departing from England, and was sacked by the team in the Italian capital last year before moving to Turkey at the start of this season.

Festive offer

Results have not been great, Fenerbahce is currently placed third in the league, already five points behind leaders and rivals Galatasaray. Earlier this year, they also failed to qualify for the Champions League.

Instead, Mourinho has been on the charm offensive in front of the microphone, with his comments regularly doing the rounds on social media and in the news. His comments on Manchester United ahead of his side’s Europa League clash with his former team found headlines in the UK and abroad, and his latest outburst regarding VAR and officiating in the Turkish league after their 3-2 win over Trabzonspor on Sunday were also hyper-critical of football in the country in general.

“Nobody abroad wants to watch the Turkish league,” he was quoted as saying by The Guardian. “Who wants to watch this Turkish league abroad? They have the Premier League, they have the French league, they have the German league, they have the Portuguese league, they have the Dutch league. Why should they see this? … It’s too grey, it’s too dark, smells bad. But that’s my job, and I will give everything to my job, to my club.”
