India’s stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah said that he is frustrated after they lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 3-1 to Australia but suggested that the series was far from a disaster for his team.
“Lots of ifs and buts because the whole series was well fought,” Bumrah said at the post-match presentation.
“It’s not like it was totally one sided. Whichever team holds their nerve and sticks together will win.”
Jasprit Bumrah is adjudged player of the series. The 31-year-old, who was named man-of-the-series with his 32 wickets — the highest ever by an Indian bowler in a single series in Australia — has almost single handedly kept India in the contest throughout the summer.
Bumrah’s injury occurred on Saturday and had only been described as “ back spasms” by the India team after the star seamer had returned from medical scans at a nearby clinic. Bumrah had back surgery to repair a stress fracture in April 2023.
Bumrah didn’t bowled in Australia’s second innings.
Now, with Sharma set to retire, one hopes that the BCCI doesn’t get unduly adventurous and give the captaincy to a batsman. Bumrah is the only worthy candidate to be named India’s long-term Test skipper. (AP)
“Frustrated to miss out. Sometimes, you have to respect your body,” he said.
“You can’t fight your body. Disappointing, I probably missed out on the spiciest wicket of the series.
“Felt a bit of discomfort during my second spell in the first innings.”
When asked about the lessons from the series, Bumrah said: “Being in the game for longer, creating pressure, absorbing pressure and playing to the situation.
“In Test cricket you have to adapt and these learnings will help us in the future.”
Bumrah said young stars like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Nitish Kumar Reddy will take lessons from this series as they carry Indian cricket going forwar
“A lot of the younger players have come in, and the learnings will help us in future.
“They have gained a lot of experience, and they will go from strength to strength. It is all about adapting and learning. We want to take what we learn forward. They’re disappointed that we haven’t won.”
