IPL Auction 2025: Shreyas Iyer on Sunday became the first player to breach the Rs 25 crore mark at the IPL auctions, becoming the most expensive player in history.

After leading Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their third Indian Premier League title, Iyer was roped in for an eye-popping Rs 26.75 crore by Punjab Kings, surpassing the previous highest of Mitchell Starc, who was sold to KKR for Rs 24.75 crore last edition.

Iyer was in the midst of a three-way bidding process between KKR, his former Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings during the historic bidding process.

After missing the entirety of IPL 2023 due to injury concerns, Iyer returned with 351 runs in 14 matches during KKR’s waltz to the title. The 29-year-old had a rocky start to the domestic season, bagging three ducks in five matches across the Duleep Trophy and the first round of the Ranji Trophy.

Iyer was quick to bounce back to form as he cracked consecutive hundreds in the subsequent Ranji rounds, including a career-best 233 against Odisha. On the eve of the auction, Iyer smacked his third Syed Mushtaq Ali hundred for Mumbai in Hyderabad. Iyer smote 21 boundaries in his latest ton, including 10 sixes.

Festive offer

Though he has yet to score an IPL ton, Iyer has struck three hundreds in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the joint-most for any batter.

His IPL records include 3127 runs in 115 matches, scoring at a strike rate of 127.48. He made his IPL debut for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in 2015 and also won the Emerging Player of the Season award. He moved to KKR in 2022 and became captain of the team, and in a shocking move, the team released him ahead of the Mega Auction.

His numbers in T20Is are one to look at as well, with 1104 runs to his name in 47 innings, scoring with a strike rate of 136.12 and will look to carry the same momentum into this season of the IPL.
