Gautam Gambhir has made it clear that social media-triggered opinionated tsunamis don’t faze him one bit. And they will certainly not shape how he views the performances of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

When asked ahead of the team’s departure to Australia, about the avalanche of chatter on social media on Indian cricket, he retorted, “What difference does it make, tell me, social media? What difference does it make in my life? For that matter, anyone’s life?”

Gambhir said that he had known from the outset that it’s going to be a highly difficult job and highly prestigious job as well, so he’s not stressed with facing the heat. “And honestly, I don’t think as if I’m feeling the heat because my job is to be absolutely honest. There are some incredibly tough people in that dressing room who have achieved some great things for the country and will continue to achieve some great things for the country. So, it’s an absolute honour to be coaching them and coaching India,” he insisted.

He was asked if was worried over the form of Kohli and Sharma. “I’ve got no concerns whatsoever for Virat and Rohit. I think they’re incredibly tough men. They’ve achieved a lot for Indian cricket and they will continue to achieve a lot in future as well. I think for me, the most important thing is that they still work really hard. And they’re still passionate. The hunger in that dressing room is incredibly important for me,” he said.

He did admit though that India were outplayed in all departments against New Zealand while fronting to the criticism. “The learnings is that we accept that we were outplayed. I’m not going to sit here and defend. I think we were outplayed in all the three departments. They (New Zealand) were more professional. And we accept that. And I think the criticism, what we are receiving, I think we take it with both hands. And we keep moving forward. Keep getting better every day,” he said.

Festive offer

The team left Indian shores undeterred by what had happened in the past. “It doesn’t change anything. Australia is a new series. Australia is a new opponent. And we go out there thinking that we’re going to definitely try and win their series,” he said.
