Sanju Samson slammed his second T20I century in the first T20 match against South Africa at the Durban’s Kingsmead stadium on Friday.

He took 47 balls to reach the milestone and became the Indian player to score the fastest century against South Africa in the shortest format. He plundered seven 4s and 9 sixes on the way to get there as the South African bowlers couldn’t find an answer to his onslaught. He replaced skipper Suryakumar Yadav who had scored a 55-ball century against the Proteas, on top of the list.

The Kerala player ultimately scored 107 runs before getting dismissed by Nqabayomzi Peter but not before becoming the first Indian (4th overall) batter to smash two consecutive T20I hundreds.

It was his second century on the bounce after he flexed his big batting muscles against Bangladesh in October, dispatching five back to back sixes in Rishad Hossain’s 10th over in Hyderabad as he went on to score his maiden T20I hundred. Opening the batting for India, Samson went on to score 111 runs of 47 deliveries.

In a recent conversation, the swashbuckling keeper-batter had revealed that despite not having made a single appearance in the T20 World Cup, he was in line to feature in the all-important summit clash against South Africa this summer.

“I had a chance to play the final. I was told to stay ready. I was. However, they decided before the toss that we would go with the same team. I was like, no worries. I was in that type of mood,” Samson conceded in a video on Vimal Kumar’s YouTube channel.

Festive offer

South Africa captain Aiden Markram won the toss and elected to field against India in the first T20 International here on Friday. Hosts South Africa have handed a debut to 21-year-old all-rounder Andile Simelane. The two teams will play a four-match series.
