While Australia suffered one of its heaviest defeats against Indian in the opening Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy at the Optus Stadium in Perth on Monday, Australian captain Pat Cummins believes that the same XI should be persisted at the second Pink ball Test match at Adelaide. With only one half-century in the match from an Australian batsman and a timid display by the Australian pacers in India’s second innings, Australia suffered its first defeat at the new stadium since 2018.

“Yeah. I mean, I am not a selector, but I would be very surprised if we made any big changes. You know, a. sample size of one this season. Really confident these are the best of 11 guys coming into this week. Yeah, this week didn’t go our way but I’m still confident that’s the case,” Cummins told ABC Sports’ Darren Lehman after the end of the day’s play.

With India registering its highest win in terms of runs in Australia with the 295-run win over the hosts, a lot has been asked from the Australian media on the Australian skipper’s approach during India’s second innings on Sunday. While pacer Josh Hazelwood had told reporters to ask Australian batsmen about the team losing three wickets in the last 30 minutes on Sunday, former Australian wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist had termed it as a sign of potential ‘divide’ in the Australian camp. When asked by Lehmann about the alleged ‘divide’, Cummins denied the issue. “We look after each other. There’s plenty of games where the batters drag us out of sticky situations and likewise, we do the opposite. So yeah, Look It’s such a great bunch. We get on really well. We challenge each other. We will stick firm; I think we are still the no.1 ranked side in the world, so this week doesn’t change that,” said Cummins while speaking with ABC Sports.

With the spotlight on Marnus Labuschagne’s dismal form in the opening Test with innings of 2 and 3, Cummins put his weight behind the 30-year-old. The Australian skipper believes that there will be a lot of conversations with Marnus and how he could do things differently. “Marnus, you know, along with yeah, quite a few guys in the team, didn’t have the week that we would have wanted. You know, it’s no secret how hard the batsmen, particularly Marn (Marnus), works in the nets. And he is always trying to find those small marginal gains. So, this week there would be a lot of conversation with the coaches around, you know maybe his approach and what he could be doing differently. You know, we know he is a class player. Even at his best, he is one of the scariest propositions for the opposition bowlers to bowl at. So yeah, this week would be about those conversations,” said Cummins while addressing the media post the match.

The Australian skipper also admitted that the world number one team was off the mark. “You know, we were clearly well off the mark. There is a lot to work on So you know, the most important thing is, there’s four Test matches next to come. What’s the next move. How do we make sure that we don’t be in this position again,” said Cummins.
