In a major blow to India’s preparations, batter Shubman Gill suffered a thumb injury during fielding in a match simulation in Perth, ahead of the first Border Gavaskar Trophy Test against Australia next week.

According to reports, Gill injured his thumb finger while taking a catch in the slips during India’s second day of match simulations at WACA. The 25-year-old Gill will now be in a race against time to be fit for the first Test, slated to begin at the Optus Stadium in Perth on November 22, Friday.

Gill had recently missed India’s opening Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru last month due to neck stiffness. Returning to the XI for the next two games during which India suffered a historic 0-3 series whitewash at home, Gill scored 144 runs, including a 90 in Mumbai.

Earlier on Friday, India were dealt with another blow on the first day of their match simulation practice at WACA when KL Rahul was injured by a bouncer from Prasidh Krishna. Though the 32-year-old tried to resume his batting after some help from the physio, Rahul decided to walk off the field. The Karnataka batter has been riding a rough patch after being initially slated for a middle-order spot before India’s home Test series against New Zealand with the backing from captain Rohit and head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Reports had also suggested that India’s senior batter Virat Kohli had undergone scans for a mystery ailment before turning out to bat in two sessions in Perth on Friday.
