Australia captain Pat Cummins became the first bowler to reach 200 wickets in the ICC World Test Championship during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test against India in Sydney.

Bowling in the second-innings on Sunday, Cummins reached the feat with his third wicket of the innings, dismissing Washington. Cummins overhauled India off-spinner R Ashwin and teammate Nathan Lyon’s tally during the Test to claim the feat.

The ongoing third WTC cycle has been Cummins’ most prolific edition yet, having picked 73 wickets in 17 Tests with five five-wicket hauls. Only Jasprit Bumrah has picked up more wickets among seamers in a WTC edition, having recorded 77 wickets this cycle.

In the 2021-23 cycle where Australia emerged victorious under his captaincy, Cummins stacked up 57 wickets in 16 matches.

Having made his Test debut in 2011, Cummins missed out on red-ball internationals for the next five years until a return in 2017.

Cummins has picked up 287 wickets in this period, the best among all fast bowlers in this period and only bettered by Lyon (316) and Ashwin (289).

The 31-year-old Cummins is the only Australian bowler to record a sub-47 strike rate in Tests (min. 100 wickets).

Cummins has led the bowling charts for Australia in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy too. The Aussie captain has bowled the most overs in the series, raising his tally to 25 scalps, bettered only by Jasprit Bumrah (32).

During the first innings of the Sydney Test, Cummins also became the seventh Australian bowler to reach 500 international wickets. Cummins’ average is only bettered by Glenn McGrath (21.75 for 948 wickets) in this club, while his bowling strike rate ranks second behind teammate Mitchell Starc’s 37.63.
