India seam spearhead Jasprit Bumrah became the first pacer to record 50 Test wickets in 2024 as he removed Australia opener Usman Khawaja on Day 1 of the Pink-Ball Test in Adelaide on Friday.
Birthday boy Bumrah is only the third Indian pacer after Kapil Dev and Zaheer Khan to bag 50 Test wickets in a calendar year. The 31-year-old reached the mark in his 11th Test of the year, featuring in all but one game India have played in the format this year.
Bumrah entered the Test after recording his first win as captain in Perth in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy opener where he racked up figures of 8/72 – the best bowling figures by a visiting fast-bowling captain.
Who else but #JaspritBumrah to get 🇮🇳 the breakthrough? 🤷♂️

Bumrah also leads the all-format charts with 65 wickets in 19 matches this year. Besides the Test workload, Bumrah was also integral to India’s T20 World Cup win in June. The wily paceman picked up 15 wickets in eight matches and finished third on the wicket-takers charts in the tournament.
Bumrah was appearing to the end of his first six-over spell after India were bundled out for 180 when he dislodged Khawaja. He extracted steep bounce from length outside the off-stump as Khawaja wafted and poked the ball to captain Rohit Sharma at first slip.
Bumrah’s 50 Test wickets are only bettered by Kapil Dev (75 – 1983, 74 – 1979) and Zaheer Khan (51 – 2002) among Indian pacers in a calendar year. Overall, Aussie legend SHane Warne holds the record for most Test wickets in a year, having bagged a whopping 96 wickets in 15 matches in 2005.
