In their first-ever appearance, India bag bronze medal in Asia Pacific Padel Cup

In their first-ever tournament appearance – also the first-ever competition of its kind in the Asia Pacific region – India’s padel team has finished third in the Asia Pacific Padel Cup in Bali, Indonesia.

Having lost the opportunity to make it to the final, India managed to defeat Malaysia 3-0 in the bronze medal match.

Aryan Goveas and Rahul Motwani started off the third-place fixture on a strong note by winning their fixture 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. It was followed by Tulsi Mehta and Vaibhavi Deshmukh winning their match 6-2, 7-6 (1) before the second girls pairing of Jenai Billimoria and Johan Fernandes wrapped up the best-of-five tie, with a resounding 6-0, 6-1 victory.

The team was led by the Spanish head coach Victor Perez, who was also accompanied by coach Imran Yusoof and manager Rithik Sinha.

In the lead up to the tournament, the team had prepared at the JSW Inspire Institute in Vijayanagar.

The tournament was won by Indonesia who beat Philippines in a thrilling gold medal match by 2-3. While Philippines had won against Indonesia in the group stage 1-4, the latter turned the tables in the final.

The other teams participating the tournament were China and Singapore.

What is padel?

A racquet sport with Mexican origin that is played in an enclosed court, like squash, that is slightly smaller than a doubles tennis court in size. The racquets are solid but the balls – albeit similar to tennis balls – are of a little less pressure. are Each match between the two teams participating comprises of doubles matches.  The height of the ball while service must be at or below the waist level.
