Hands or legs? Where do dengue mosquitoes bite the most?

With dengue cases surging every single day, it is important not just to take preventive measures but also to learn how these mosquitoes are different from others. Distinct properties like bites, time of bite will help identify them and take measures proactively. Understanding where these mosquitoes prefer to bite and why can help people take preventive measures to avoid dengue fever, a potentially severe viral illness transmitted by their bites.
Dengue mosquitoes, primarily Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, are known to bite humans on exposed areas. Mosquitoes, especially Aedes aegypti, are drawn to warmth and specific compounds found in human sweat. The feet and ankles often produce more sweat, especially in warm or tropical climates, making them particularly appealing to mosquitoes. When people exhale, they release CO₂, which attracts mosquitoes. Since CO₂ disperses in the air, mosquitoes are adept at following the scent, leading them to target exposed skin on the legs, hands, or arms.
Although they often bite legs and feet, dengue mosquitoes also target the hands, arms, neck, and face if these areas are exposed. This flexibility in targeting different parts of the body allows them to adapt their biting behavior based on a person’s clothing, activity, and position.

Unlike some other mosquito species,

Aedes mosquitoes

are active during the day, with peak activity in the early morning and late afternoon. As per a report released by the Union Ministry of Health, “Dengue vector mosquitoes bite during day time usually in morning (8-10 am) & afternoon (3-5 pm) hours.” During these hours, people tend to wear lighter clothing or expose their arms and legs, which increases the risk of being bitten. These mosquitoes thrive in warm, humid environments, such as tropical and subtropical regions, where people are more likely to wear shorts, sandals, or sleeveless shirts, leaving legs and arms exposed. Dengue vector mosquitoes rest in indoor houses mainly in corners under furniture, beds, shelves, almirah and dark clothing hanging inside.

Preventive measures to follow

  • Wearing long-sleeved shirts, pants, socks, and closed shoes helps protect the legs and feet, which are prime targets for dengue mosquitoes.
  • Applying DEET or picaridin-based mosquito repellents to exposed skin on hands, arms, and legs can significantly reduce the risk of bites. Be sure to reapply as directed, especially if you are sweating.
  • Screens on windows and doors, as well as bed nets, provide additional protection. Since Aedes mosquitoes are most active during the day, it’s helpful to keep windows and doors closed during peak hours.
  • These mosquitoes breed in stagnant water found in containers, pots, and other small water-collecting objects. Regularly cleaning or removing these items from your home and surroundings reduces mosquito populations.
