The first human case of bird flu has been reported in Louisiana. On Dec. 13, the
Louisiana Department of Health
(LDH) confirmed that the first ‘presumptive’ positive human case of avian influenza (HPAI), or H5N1 had been detected. The patient, who is a resident of southwestern Louisiana is currently hospitalized.
The LDH’s Office of Public Health is working closely with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to investigate the case. It was found that the patient was exposed to sick and dead birds, which might have been the cause of infection.
According to LDH, H5N1 is a type of influenza virus that causes highly infectious and severe respiratory disease in birds. There have been outbreaks of the H5N1 avian influenza viruses in wild birds and poultry since 2022, in the US. By Dec. 13, 60 confirmed human cases of H5N1 have been reported across the U.S., and has caused due to exposure to infected poultry or dairy cows. There is no transmission from human to human currently reported in the US. People who are directly exposed to birds, poultry, or cows are at higher risk.

The authorities have stated that the best way to prevent the infection is to avoid exposure to these sources, including direct contact with wild birds and other animals infected with or suspected to be infected with bird flu viruses.
How to prevent the infection?
- Do not touch sick or dead animals or their droppings and avoid bringing them home. You can report dead or sick birds or animals to the USDA toll-free at 1-866-536-7593 or the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry Diagnostic Lab at 318-927-3441
- Do not eat uncooked or undercooked food. Cook poultry, eggs, as well as animal products to proper temperature.
- Avoid uncooked food products such as unpasteurized raw milk or cheeses from animals.
- If you work on poultry or dairy farms, ask your provider about getting seasonal flu vaccination.
- Keep your pets away from sick or dead animals.
