World No 2 Fabiano Caruana, has called Gukesh’s match against Anish Giri in the opening round of the Tata Steel chess tournament in the Dutch town of Wijk aan Zee “absolutely insane.”
“Yesterday was absolutely insane,” said Caruana.
“I went to the gym in the hotel and then I had my phone showing Gukesh and Anish and it was at exactly at this moment when he could play eBishop before and it showed that he was winning and I couldn’t like calculate everything of course then he played Bishop before which didn’t look like an easy move.
“But then I realised that my heart rate was going up and I was just getting too worked up and it wasn’t because I was on the treadmill. After the game was over I calmed down a bit.”
