More than three years after the European Super League plan was scrapped in the wake of widespread backlash, the tournament is set to be revived in a new name. According to the Telegraph, now branded as ‘Unify League’ is likely to challenge the Champions League with a free-to-watch claim being proposed to lure the fans. It is not clear whether this concept has the backing of the English clubs.
As per the report, the rebranded tournament will not have automatic qualification as it was the case when it was first launched. Instead there is a proposed annual qualification for all four leagues within the Unify League by the organisers. According to the Telegraph, the organisers are planning to launch a streaming platform called “Unified” where fans can watch the game for free at a high-level of advertising content. There is also the option of going ad-free in a subscription based model like Spotify.
With a new model in place, according to the Telegraph, A22 which is a Madrid-based company that is now the organiser of the event, is all set to approach UEFA to seek its permission to start the tournament. Unlike 2021, A22 believes the UEFA is obliged to do so as per the December 2023 ruling from the European courts.
According to the Unify League, 96 clubs will compete in three competitions. The Unify League champions would eventually come from the top two tiers, the Star League and Gold League. “Both would feature 16 teams divided in both cases into two groups of eight. Those eight would play each home and away – 14 group stages fixtures. The top two clubs from each of the four groups would go through to a final eight,” the report said.
In the knockouts, the quarterfinal will follow a home and away leg model, while the semifinals played in a single leg at a neutral venue with the final to follow in the same week. Any team that makes it to the final will get to play 18 matches.
