Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has directed two flights to be sent to Amsterdam as part of a rescue mission after alleged attacks on football fans in Amsterdam. As per reports and videos circulated on the social media, that were verified by news agency Reuters, violence targeting Israeli fans broke out after the Europa League match between Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv at Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam. Maccabi Tel Aviv is identified as a Jewish club with the Star of David as their logo.

“Fans who went to see a football game encountered anti-Semitism and were attacked with unimaginable cruelty just because of their Jewishness and Israeliness,” Israeli Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said in a post on X.

Local authorities have said that 57 people have been detained so far as pro-Palestinian supporters tried to march towards the Johan Cruyff Arena. A video on social media showed a group of people chasing a man before assaulting him. The IDF said it is coordinating with the Dutch government to pull off the rescue mission. “The mission will be deployed using cargo aircraft and include medical and rescue teams,” the IDF said.

“We see with horror this morning, the shocking images and videos that since October 7th, we had hoped never to see again: an anti-Semitic pogrom currently taking place against Maccabi Tel Aviv fans and Israeli citizens in the heart of Amsterdam,” Israel president Isaac Herzog wrote in a message on the social media platform X.

This adds to mounting tension amidst the Israel-Gaza conflict. More than 43,300 Palestinians have been killed in more than a year of war as per Gaza health officials.
