President-elect Donald Trump is a self-confessed Diet Coke lover and doesn’t shy away from downing up to 12 cans of the zero-calorie beverage. Perhaps for a change, recently during an event, he was seen sipping on a Prime drink, a brand co-created by influencers Logan Paul and KSI that has skyrocketed in popularity. Donald Trump was celebrating his election victory at the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in New York with Elon Musk and some of his cabinet picks in attendance.
But is it safe for health and what are its ingredients, benefits and potential side effects? Scroll down to know.
What’s in Prime Energy?
Aimed to ‘refresh, replenish, and refuel’, there are two main offerings of Prime drinks – Prime Energy and Prime Hydration. While Prime Hydration is a sports drink with electrolytes and vitamins, safe for the below 18 age group, Prime Energy has high caffeine levels, and works as an energy drink, and is advised only for those above 18. Prime Energy has 200 milligrams of caffeine per 12-ounce which is far higher than a standard 8-ounce cup of coffee, which typically has about 95 milligrams.
Prime Hydration has water, electrolytes, antioxidants, B Vitamins, artificial sweeteners (sucralose and acesulfame potassium), flavours, stabilisers and sea salt. Prime Energy has carbonated filtered water, coconut water from concentrate, vitamins, electrolytes, Artificial sweeteners (sucralose), preservatives, natural flavours, amino acids, Inositol (a sugar alcohol), caffeine, Glucuronolactone (a common ingredient in sports drink), according to Forbes Health.
Benefits
The high caffeine content can boost focus, reaction time, and energy levels. Coconut water and added electrolytes aim to aid in hydration and muscle function, while BCAAs (branched-chain amino acids) may assist with muscle recovery.
Caffeine concern
Prime Energy has a very high concentration of caffeine compared to other energy drinks like Red Bull and Rockstar which have 80 milligrams of caffeine in 8.4-ounce can, and 160 milligrams of caffeine in 16-ounce can respectively.
It is not advisable for children below 12 years to consume caffeine in any form and kids ages 12 to 18 years should not exceed 100 milligrams of caffeine per day, as per health guidelines.
Side effects
Energy drinks may have side effects like heart failure, irregular heartbeat, dehydration, anxiety and sleep issues.
Artificial sweeteners also have potential side effects. Having them regularly can increase cardiovascular disease risk, including heart attack. They can also increase cravings and can potentially lead to weight gain due to that. Artificial sweeteners can also harm liver, affect moods and cause migraines and headaches
While Prime Energy may offer a temporary energy boost, the side effects, particularly from high caffeine intake, should be kept in mind. Moderation and a careful review of ingredients is important.
